After returning from Wise Woman 2014, my head was swimming with information. I was excited to think that when the next opportunity arose, I would be prepared with some natural remedies in my back pocket. I wasn’t expecting to come back and have to use them right away though!
Now that it is cold and flu season, it’s a good idea (in general even) to boost our immune system. Opting out of flu shots, and instead nourishing your body with vegetables, loading up on greens, and taking immune building herbs such as Echinacea (a favorite in my household, and inexpensive!) will help your body build up a natural immunity for prevention.
That being said, sometimes it’s possible to pick up mild colds.
The difference I have found though, is that when you strengthen your immunity and use natural remedies for comfort, the severity of the cold lessens and in general sickness length time is cut short. You’re giving your body a chance to do what it was designed to do- which is restore and repair!
So when my daughter picked up a case of the sniffles, accompanied by a sore throat, I was ready with some natural remedies to make her feel comfortable. That’s what mamas do- we swoop in and try to make it all better.
Buying over-the-counter drugs is not the safest option
Taking over-the-counter drugs, while the most popular choice in this day and age, will actually weaken your child’s ability to fight infections. It may mask the symptoms, sure, but you’re also risking complications from giving your child drugs. Every day, children have serious reactions to medications and common cold/flu medicines, sometimes from just a small (recommended!) dosage. We are clearly a nation that is over-medicating and unnecessarily prescribing drugs, instead of getting to the root of the problem. Children are becoming guinea pigs, when there is not really enough information to see what these long term effects will mean for them in the future.
People fear what they do not know. While they feel safe giving their child drugs with ingredients lists as long as the dictionary, they get paranoid about giving their kids natural remedies. I can sympathize with this, because we have been programmed from the media for years to take a pill or drink a syrup when you are feeling icky. And when you don’t know any information about a certain plant, you may flip out if your child ingests some unexpectedly…it happens.
The important thing to remember is that when your child (or yourself) is feeling under the weather, easing the experience in the safest way possible will help them get through it with little complaint. Use that as a jumping off point to teach your children to treat their body with care by eating healthy- your body is your partner and if you treat is right, it will be able to combat the ickies without any sort of “remedy” at all!
Below are three safe and effective natural remedies for sore throats:
- 2-3 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1 C hot water
- Touch of maple syrup
- Add garlic to a 8 oz. jar.
- Pour hot water over garlic, close with a lid.
- Let sit for 20 minutes.
- Remove garlic, and add a touch of maple syrup to make it easier for children to drink.
Salt and Essential Oil Gargle
- ½ teaspoon sea salt
- 1-2 drops of thyme and/or oregano essential oil
- ¼ C warm water
- Combine all ingredients in a small cup.
- Have your child gargle a few times and spit out.
DIY Throat Spray
- Add all ingredients to an empty (unused!) spray bottle.
- Spray towards the back of throat (try to keep away from the tongue) as needed.
